give it a status tag.

active and closed take precedence over evergreen.

something is only evergreen if you’re like “well, this can’t really be either…”

  • is it a list of things you think you’ll still update in the future if you have more things for it, but until a specific point you’re not likely to touch it? closed.
  • BUT if it’s a list of things where you’re like, “i’ll probably add to this continually,” sure, it’s evergreen.
  • it’s the difference between my ships (closed until i happen to have a new ship) and wishlist (i’m always finding new things i want).

anything in the shelf folder must receive the status tag saved. if it doesn’t feel right under “saved” (like it’s your content, you’ve curated it, or you’ve annotated it) — it probably shouldn’t be in the shelf folder!!!!!

give it a topic tag. (at least one.)

see the sidebar (obsidian notebook navigator, not quartz) for existing topics.

disambiguation:

  • as much as possible, try not to use umbrella tags (media/, personal/, rships/) as tags, but in some cases it can’t be helped.
  • personal/about
  • artmaking is meta about the creative process. projects is stuff you’re actually working on.
  • assume everything in this notebook is an “about you” note anyway, so reserve personal/about for only things that really go nowhere else.

unsorted is for notes you think MIGHT be able to create a new canonical topic tag but require more notes before you canonize it.

hit save to autofill the created/modified date.

this is fairly straightforward. if you’re porting over a note from a different thought receptacle (e.g. notion, apple notes, listography), make sure to edit the created date to match.

decide whether or not you’re publishing the note.

some notes can just be fore youm. :) OR you’re just not ready to publish it yet, lol.

if publishing:

  • check the box. (this is important for quartz syncer plugin)
  • GIVE IT A PERMALINK. this is important, so notes that move from desk to archive and vice versa don’t have shitty breaking URLs.
    • seems like quartz doesn’t honor the permalink. maybe because i’m using quartz syncer…? don’t know what to do about this.

if not publishing:

  • ok, well, uncheck the box then. don’t just leave it with the line in the middle, because you’ll always be like “did i make a decision on this already?” unchecking shows you’ve looked at it already and decided.

some notes kind of have no relevance to other ones, so not all notes need a “see also” at the bottom. but the joy of obsidian is the linkage, and most of your notes are kind of related to some others.

if

  • check the box.
  • related notes → copy paste into the bottom of the file, and edit as needed.

no

  • uncheck the related notes box, for the same reason as you uncheck the publish box.

try not to have a billion related notes — i think 7 is already pushing it. filter using the “WHERE” bit of a dataview query as you see fit.

note: we use quartz syncer SPECIFICALLY for the fact that they parse dataview and turn it into markdown. we are avoiding the pain of having to use the dataview serializer plugin.
